1. SEPA Netball Symposium
This was a great 3 hour session immediately preceding the conference. Two topics I’d like to comment on include athlete blister education and athlete blister screening.
1a. Athlete Blister Education
What does athlete blister education actually look like? Is it just about:
- Hygiene
- Hotspots
- First aid
In my opinion, high quality and helpful blister education would include:
- An explanation of cause (ie: not rubbing)
- An explanation of how/why blisters are predictable (ie: their location)
- An assurance that blisters are 100% preventable (make sure you know the best prevention for each anatomical site, and how to nuance it to your clients foot structure, function and activity)
- Start with the BEST prevention in place (rather than starting with nothing/minimal, and progressing to better once the blister has already formed)
- How meaningful blister treatment involves the prevention (this is what minimises shear to make the blister hurt less and not get worse as activity continues)
